Tanzania Steps Up Large-Scale Solar and Wind Power Acquisition to Reinforce Its Electricity Network

Tanzania is advancing its renewable energy agenda by promoting the development of utility-scale wind and solar projects. The government is actively encouraging private sector participation in the power industry to support infrastructure upgrades. These efforts aim to strengthen energy security and enhance the reliability of the national electricity grid.
To advance its clean energy transition, Tanzania's state-owned utility, TANESCO, is inviting independent power producers to develop large-scale renewable energy projects. The country offers strong renewable energy resources, with high solar irradiation across central regions and favorable wind conditions in areas such as Makambako and Kititimo. These advantages position Tanzania for expanded utility-scale solar and wind power development.
A flagship initiative in Tanzania’s renewable energy expansion is the Kishapu Solar Project in the Shinyanga Region. Supported by the French Development Agency, the project's initial 50 MW phase is already supplying power to the national grid, making it the country's largest operational grid-connected solar facility. Plans are underway for a second phase that will contribute an additional 100 MW of solar generation capacity.
Beyond the Kishapu Solar Project, Tanzania is collaborating with international renewable energy developers to advance long-term investments in large-scale wind and solar power. Several planned projects are expected to add substantial generation capacity and support the country's growing electricity demand. These initiatives will also help reduce reliance on expensive fossil fuel-based power generation and promote a cleaner energy mix.
The government is simultaneously investing in regional transmission infrastructure to accommodate growing renewable energy capacity. Plans include expanding high-voltage interconnections with neighboring countries through East and Southern African power pool networks. These upgrades are expected to enhance cross-border electricity trade, improve grid stability, and support the integration of variable renewable energy sources.
Through expanded renewable energy procurement and stronger regional grid connections, Tanzania is working to create a more resilient and sustainable electricity sector. These efforts are expected to improve energy security, support economic development, and increase access to reliable power across the country.
