Tanzania Moves Towards Steel Import Ban as Local Production Surges.

Posted on : Thursday, 5th June 2025

Tanzania is preparing to halt steel imports due to a sharp increase in local manufacturing output, signaling a major step forward in the country’s industrialization agenda.

During a visit to Lodhia Industries in Mkuranga District, Coast Region, Prof. Kitila Mkumbo—Minister in the President's Office for Planning and Investment—praised the nation's progress, describing the expansion of domestic steel production as transformative. He noted that Tanzania's steel industry is now not only meeting national demand but also exceeding it.

“Thanks to 19 operational steel plants producing a combined 1.2 million tonnes, while domestic consumption stands at just 600,000 tonnes, we’ve achieved self-sufficiency,” said Prof. Mkumbo. “We no longer need to depend on imported steel.”

Lodhia Industries, one of the country’s leading steel manufacturers, produces steel products including corrugated iron sheets and contributes significantly to both employment and regional exports. The company’s CEO, Manoj Gopi, highlighted their $100 million investment and the current workforce of 2,370 employees, adding that their products are exported to neighboring countries such as Rwanda, Burundi, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

James Maziku, Director of Investment Facilitation at the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), echoed the minister’s sentiments, attributing the sector’s growth to the government’s commitment to creating an investor-friendly environment. “Such robust investments not only fulfill local needs but also enhance Tanzania’s role in regional trade,” he stated.

Mariam Kisangi, Chairperson of the Dar es Salaam Region MPs, also stressed the importance of public-private collaboration in driving economic development. She reaffirmed the government’s support for policies that attract and retain investment.

The rise of domestic steel production has positively impacted job creation and is expected to strengthen infrastructure development and broader industrial growth. With more than 2,300 local employees, Lodhia Industries exemplifies how local investment can lead to tangible economic benefits.

As Tanzania's steel sector gains strength, the government is focusing on ensuring that local demand remains the top priority. Prof. Mkumbo emphasized, “We’ve fulfilled local needs, and moving forward, domestic consumption will be our focus rather than prioritizing exports.”
