China Provides Kenya With A Sh1.8 Billion Grant To Improve Hospitals

Posted on : Thursday, 3rd April 2025

The government of Kenya received a Sh1.8 billion grant from China to upgrade important hospitals across the country, which has boosted the country's healthcare system.

The agreement was signed at the Treasury Building this morning by Guo Haiyan, the ambassador of the People's Republic of China to Kenya and Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi.

"This grant is a significant step in strengthening our healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality medical services for all Kenyans," CS Mbadi stated during the signing event.

According to Mbadi, the government plans to upgrade a number of hospitals, including Kaimosi Farmers Training College, Londiani Referral Hospital, Baringo County Referral Hospital, Kilifi Hospital, Misikhu Hospital and Bildad Kagia Hospital.

During President William Ruto's formal visit to China in September 2024, Kenya obtained a Sh40 billion loan from the Chinese government.

With the goal of promoting regional development and economic prosperity, this financing will finish 15 stalled infrastructure projects spread across over ten counties.

China is currently the biggest international lender to Kenya and since the government has stated that it has no choice but to keep borrowing, China's portion of Kenya's debt is probably going to increase once more.

Kenya owed China over Sh920.52 billion as of March 2024, with the majority of that amount going towards port improvements, railroads and other infrastructure projects.
