

Africa’s Plywood Market Poised for Steady Growth and Rising Demand

The African plywood market is poised for steady growth over the next decade, driven by rising demand across the continent. With an anticipated CAGR of +0.3% from 2024 to 2035, market volume is projected to reach 2.2 million cubic meters by 2035. In value terms, the market is expected to expand at a CAGR of +1.3%, reaching an impressive $1.2 billion by 2035.
For the fourth consecutive year, plywood consumption in Africa has continued its upward trend, growing by 1.8% to 2.1 million cubic meters in 2024. From 2013 to 2024, consumption increased at a consistent annual rate of +2.0%, demonstrating resilience and steady demand. Notably, 2018 saw a remarkable 9.7% surge in growth. Consumption is expected to maintain positive momentum in the coming years.
Key plywood consumers in 2024 included Algeria (213K cubic meters), Egypt (179K cubic meters), and Kenya (150K cubic meters), together accounting for 25% of total consumption. Other high-growth markets include Cote d’Ivoire, which experienced an impressive CAGR of +41.0%. In value terms, Egypt, Morocco, and Gabon led the market, making up 35% of total sales.
Gabon stood out with the highest per capita plywood consumption (34 cubic meters per 1,000 persons), followed by Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Ghana. Additionally, overseas plywood purchases in 2024 reached 1.1 million cubic meters, marking a strong resurgence since 2021.
With increasing demand and expanding markets, the African plywood industry is on a promising trajectory for long-term growth.
