Kwale County Lights Up Diani Beachfronts to Boost Security and Tourism
Posted on : Monday, 3rd March 2025
The Kwale County Government is installing solar-powered streetlights along Diani’s beachfronts to enhance security and boost tourism. Governor Fatuma Achani says the initiative will improve socio-economic activities and address long-standing concerns about poor night-time visibility and crime.
She emphasized that well-lit streets will encourage a 24-hour economy, making roads safer for tourists, businesses, and residents. Accompanied by Deputy Governor Chirema Kombo and Tourism Executive Michael Mutua, Achani assured that the initiative would expand to all parts of Kwale.
Street lighting, she noted, significantly improves safety, deters crime, and enhances the overall quality of life. The project will also contribute to environmental sustainability and energy efficiency.
Residents have long voiced concerns about insecurity in tourist hotspots, with reports of theft in poorly lit areas. Achani urged the community to safeguard the infrastructure against vandalism. “We urge residents to take ownership of these projects and protect them,” she stated.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to improve security, infrastructure, and green energy use. Achani also reiterated her administration’s commitment to addressing the ‘beach boys’ menace, which has been a security concern for tourists.
Diani Beach, a premier holiday destination, has been voted Africa’s best beach for six consecutive years. The newly installed streetlights aim to elevate its appeal, ensuring a safer and more vibrant tourism hub for visitors and residents alike.
