East Africa's Power Output poised to reach 7,480MW by 2022

Posted on : Wednesday, 3rd April 2019

By 2022, the East African Community (EAC) will have a combined generation of 7,480 MW of electricity. This is set to be accomplished through a $ 2.5 billion funding from the African Development Bank (AfDB)  for infrastructure projects in the region. According to multiple sources, the combined total installed power capacity in East Africa currently exceeds 5,000 megawatts.

Statistics from the EAC partner states with the exception of South Sudan shows that East Africa currently gets more than half of its electricity through hydro power, but the region is also looking towards other sources of energy such as natural gas, solar and wind.

“There has an unprecedented level of resources mobilized in this sector,” the EAC secretary general Liberat Mfumukeko said.

After brief consultations with the bank’s director general for Eastern Africa region Gabriel Negatu, the EAC secretary general Liberat Mfumukeko asserted that “There has an unprecedented level of resources mobilized in this sector”.

The pan - African bank approved $ 2.5 billion last October to support Eastern Africa's Regional Integration Strategy (RISP 2018 - 2022). The funds will go to improve regional transportation and ICT connectivity, regional energy infrastructure and water projects.
