Posted on : Tuesday, 3rd October 2017

The Tanzanian governments have designs on upgrading the dual carriageway stretch of the Arusha-Holili road as they look to find funds to finance the project and upgrade the rest of the road. The carriageway stretches 14.2 kilometers and will pose as an arduous endeavour.

The government has taken taken steps to approach the Japanese government as an a means to fund secure the funds and get the project running. Approaches to extend the road from Tengeru to the Usa River are yet to be finalized; the rehabilitation of the Kikafu Bridge near Moshi also remains undecided.

The Arusha-Holili Road is only a part of a 240km, road stretching to Voi in Kenya. The road is currenting undergoing an upgrading process within the framework laid by the East African Road Project (EARP), and is expected to cost up to the tune of US$400 million.

This project is also part of a bigger agenda aimed at upgrading major roads to facilitate cross-border trade and free movement of people as well as merchandise.

Hosea Nyangweso siad “Rehabilitation of the Usa River-Moshi -Holili is not in the immediate implementation plan”, “However, the major civil works beyond Usa River will be realigning of the Kikafu River bridge.”

The mega project is being funded by the African Deveopment  Bank, the traditional financier of major road projects in East Africa.
