Redavia provides gold mine in Tanzania with more solar power

Posted on : Thursday, 27th July 2017

Germany-based off-grid specialist Redavia GmbH announced that it has supplied another solar container for its off-grid PV project at the mining site of the Tanzanian gold producer Shanta Gold. Including this new addition, the installation has now reached 674 kW of capacity and consists of eight solar containers. The first “container solar plant” was deployed in 2014, the company said.

“We could already see significant benefits since inception, but this solar expansion will make us a true role model within our industry,” said Shanta Gold CEO Toby Bradbury.

The company claims that its business model, based on the supply of containers including solar modules and electrical components, is “easy to ship, set up, scale and redeploy.” Redavia rents out its “containerized“ solar plants to communities and businesses in remote areas and developing countries. The offer may include integration of solar power into existing or new on-site diesel generation power systems.

A good number of small off-grid PV projects have been launched at several mining sites around the world over the past years. Often mine operations have a short lifetime and shifting commodity prices can lead to the shuttering of operations. In these cases, a 15-year renewable energy investment is not suitable. But tailored solutions are being offered by the solar sector to meet this particular challenge.
