Smart Streetlights to Light Up IoT Investments

Posted on : Wednesday, 23rd November 2016

Smart grid deployments in the utility sector in a first wave of Internet of Things (IoT) investment, is now passé. The public outdoor street-lighting sector is aglow with IoT investment, with global investment over the next decade expected to cumulatively touch $69.5 billion. By 2020, it is expected that 89% of cities and municipalities will transition to LED streetlights, of which 42% will be networked to make them “smart”.

This is according to a new study by Northeast Group. A smart move indeed, considering that investment in LED and smart streetlights will bring down costs significantly while cutting down energy and maintenance bills. The study states that countries like the Americas, Europe and Asia, have large deployments in progress, while projects are on a roll in diverse nations like India, Brazil, Kazakhstan, South Africa and Vietnam. It includes a cost-benefit analysis of both LED and smart street-lighting, details on 20 case study deployments and an explanation of drivers and challenges in the sector.

Experts suggest that replacing existing streetlights with an LED-based smart street-lighting system can reduce the energy and operations cost by up to 50%.

Says Ben Gardner, President, Northeast Group: “LED and smart streetlights are a common sense investment for cities. Costs have fallen significantly and the energy and maintenance savings benefits are proven. There has been a lot of hype surrounding smart cities and the IoT, but the utility sector has the best track record of real-world deployments. Utilities and cities have already deployed smart grid and smart metering infrastructure and now they are proceeding with their street-lighting infrastructure,”

The study also revealed the emergence of leaders like Telensa, Silver Spring Networks, Echelon, Philips, DimOnOff, GE, Harvard Technology and Sensus, in a fragmented vendor set-up.
