Posted on : Thursday, 20th October 2016

Geita — The government through the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has established a special consulting engineering unit in a bid to build the capacity of local engineers who will oversee road construction projects. This move will save the funds spent on the engagement of foreign experts.

The Minister for Works, Transport and Communication, Prof Makame Mbarawa, made the remarks recently when visiting Geita Region where he inspected a 112 kilometre road project from Uyovu to Bwanga and Biharamulo, which is supervised by local consulting engineers.

"At least two million Us dollars have been saved under the supervision of local consulting engineers in various road construction projects in the regions of Kagera, Mwanza, Geita and Kilimanjaro," said Prof Mbarawa.

He expressed satisfaction on the good supervision work by the local engineers, pledging to grant support so that more funds could be saved. The minister further noted that in five years time major projects will be channelled to the agency so that the funds obtained would be directed to other construction projects.

The Manager of TANROADS in Geita, Eng. Harun Senkuku, pointed out that the road project from Uyovu to Bwanga was implemented by 47 per cent and the 90bn/- Bwanga-Biharamulo project had been executed by 42 per cent. Eng. Senkuku had assured the minister of timely completion of the project so that the residents of Kagera and Geita regions would begin using the road.

On his part, a consulting engineer from TECU, Eng. Gladson Yohana, said their role as supervisors in major projects has assisted them to gain more practical experience. "We promise to perform our works properly by adhering to all professional standards so that we produce good quality jobs," noted Eng. Yohana.

In another development, Prof Mbarawa inspected MV Chato ferry and directed the Manager of Tanzania Electrical, Mechanical and Electronics Services Agency (TEMESA) in Geita, Eng. Fredinand Mishamo, to make sure that the ferry was self-sustaining via its own collected revenue.
