Kenya: Kiambu Uses Technology to Build Cheaper Access Roads

Posted on : Monday, 3rd October 2016

Kiambu — In efforts to provide durable roads across the county, Kiambu government has over the recent months been searching and developing innovative methods of road design, construction and maintenance in order to maximise the utilisation of the available funds.

One such methods is the use of the soil enhancing stabilisers, a technology globally known as Soil Enhancing Solutions that capitalises on enzymes to modify roads, irrespective of the soils.
This, according to Governor William Kabogo employs the use of locally available screened natural material that is mixed with stabilisers to make it impervious to prevent water into susceptible base material, making it more durable than the normal murram roads.
"Part of our 2017 infrastructure plan of constructing 3,500 km of roads across the county will be met through the use of this technology, that has been widely used in developed countries like Israel and India," he said.
Already, roads in Thika and Ruiru sub-counties used for piloting are almost complete with the county readying itself to roll it out throughout the region for access roads upgrades and construction.
"We have partnered with companies from Israel and India to demonstrate how the soil-stabilising solution and use of nanotechnology is effective in upgrading our roads," noted Kabogo adding that the pilot results were satisfactory and all the companies needed to do was tender.
The county has opted for alternatives to the standard bitumen because the globally tested options because they are cheaper.
