Tanzania: Zanzibaris Enlightened On Dental Care

Posted on : Tuesday, 20th September 2016

Zanzibar — Over 1,000 children and adults in Malindi constituency have been provided with free dental hygiene kits in a move geared to minimise common dental problems.

'Go for Zanzibar e.V. (GOZA)' a non-Profit Organisation founded six years ago by a Germany Lady, Ms Antje Fleischer, distributed the dental hygiene kits to at least one thousand residents with the majority being children of Malindi constituency in the Stone Town.

"We have opted to continue raising awareness about dental heath to minimise teeth problems among children and adults," Ms Fleischer said after giving out the dental hygiene kits.

Mr Mussa Baucha Project Manager of GOZA, said at the event supervised by the Stone Town Community Police (STCP) office, where residents received one kit, each.

It is recommended to brush teeth at least twice a day, but ten-year-old Ms Amina Suleiman, was happy to walk away with the kits saying she would brush her teeth three or more times a day.

"The dental health problem in our society is one of the challenges facing people. Yet many tend to ignore it until it is too late.

They end up losing some of their teeth," Mr Baucha said, adding that the cost of the kits is 1.2m/-.

Health experts say dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease can have a wide range of effects, not only causing pain and the need to remove decayed teeth, but affecting a person's ability to speak, eat, smile and socialise.
