Dar-es-Salaam Earmarks 343bn for Construction of Roads, Maintenance Projects

Dar es Salaam Regional Road Board has earmarked 343bn/-for road construction and maintenance projects for the 2016/17 fiscal year, being an additional of 266bn/- in comparison to the previous budget.
Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Saidi Meck Sadiki, said in Dar es Salaam that the region will in the next financial year start implementing the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Programme (DMDP).
"The programme is aimed at improving infrastructure including roads in order to curb traffic road," said Mr Sadiki, who doubles as Regional Road Board (RRB), during a RRB meeting.
DMDP is geared towards improving urban services and institutional capacity in the Dar es Salaam metropolitan area, and to facilitate potential emergency response. The project comprises of four components.
Mr Sadiki directed the city's municipalities (Ilala, Kinondoni and Temeke) to allocate fund for compensation to pay residents who would be forced to vacate the project areas as the regional authority had not allocated fund for the compensation.
"It should be noted that DMDP is not responsible to pay compensation, all municipalities should allocate fund for compensation," he directed.
As for road construction and repair projects, Mr Sadiki, pointed out that Ilala municipality had set aside 66bn/- for the purpose while Kinondoni municipality had allocated 78bn/- and Temeke municipality had earmarked 68bn/-.
He called upon Kinondoni municipality to increase budget for the road construction projects as the major challenge for the municipality is congestion and that the municipality should address the challenge.
Ms Bonnah Kaluwa, Segerea MP and Regional Road Board Member, urged the regional authority to set aside areas for people who are supposed to vacate the areas prone to floods largely valleys.
"Those who are living in valleys have no other houses to live or plot to build residential houses," she said.
However, Mr Sadiki said the government had already issued notice to vacate the areas since 2002, saying the people should vacate the areas as it was risky living in the areas.
