Posted on : Tuesday, 17th November 2015
Nakuru County has signed an agricultural development agreement with a county in China that will foster knowledge on rice farming on arid areas.
The Sister- City agreement with Ningxia Hui County will provide Nakuru County with the expertise on how to increase rice yields, by farming on both dry land and wetlands.
Unlike Kenya, where rice is only grown in wetlands, China produces the crop on dry land.
The agreement was signed by Governor's Kinuthia Mbugua and his Chinese counterpart Wang Heshan in Ningxia Hui County on Thursday during the 2nd Forum on Chinese-African Local Government Cooperation in Beijing.
The two counties would benefit from exchange programmes with mutual benefits in trade, education, culture and personnel among others in order to promote prosperity and development.
The agreement included promotion of research and development and improvement of maize farming, which is vital to the two nations.
"Working together on agriculture where shared common interest particularly in Corn improvement in both regions and improvement of sheep breeds by interbreeding sheep from the two counties for better outcome," read part of the agreement.
There would be value addition for potatoes through adapting technology Ningxia Hui on processing noodles. A noodle processing factory would also be established through the initiative.
