President Uhuru Kenyatta commissioned construction works of the crucial road that traverses across the vast county and which has been ignored since independence.
Local leaders lauded President Kenyatta saying the tarmacking of the road will not only spur growth in the county but ease transportation of people and goods between Kenya and Tanzania in the spirit of the East African Cooperation.
The 110 km road links Tanzania and Kenya through the Taveta-Voi road. The road is tarmacked on the Tanzania side but has remained in poor state on the Kenyan side for the last 50 years.
The road passes through three constituencies of Taveta, Mwatate and Voi that form part of Taita/ Taveta County. The road does not pass through the 4th constituency of Wundanyi
Taita/ Taveta leaders said the construction of the road, alongside the ongoing construction of the Taveta One-Stop border point are important developments that will dramatically change the way Kenya and its people do business with their neighbours.
Local residents expressed gratitude to the Government for initiating and implementing development projects which they said are a dream come true.
Leaders from the area said since independence all past Government have never done what is being witnessed currently in the County.
Led by Governor John Mruttu, and local Mps led by Taveta Member of Parliament Dr. Naomi Shaban , the residents said they they are fed up with empty rhetoric that help nobody.
The residents said they would rather work with the Government to achieve what they have been yearning for.
Besides opening the Taveta –Voi road the President also opened Taveta deputy county Commissioner’s office, the new Taveta market/bus park before inspecting the ongoing construction of the Taveta one stop border point which is part of the northern corridor intergration projects.
